What are the Different Types of Business Phone Systems?

PBX telephone systems:

Private branch exchange business phones system, which allows voice communications via the PSTN, Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), by using circuit-switched telephonephony. This happens when voice is transmitted via copper wire networks, in the form of analog signals. There are two kinds of PBX phone systems.

On-prem PBX telephone systems

On-prem PBX phones come with heavy hardware, PBX servers and physical wires, as well as specially designed phones.

They share a trunk with their internal phones. This means that they are able to speak to each other without needing external lines.

These phones are used for both internal and external communications.

They are expensive and hard to maintain, they require a large infrastructure. They also have a limited flexibility and controls.

Cloud cloud storage for PBX phone systems

A cloud PBX phone platform gives businesses access to a cloud-based web-based telephony platform. It comes with the same features available in an on-premise PBX system.

No additional hardware is required. Calls are routed to agents' mobile phones (enabling remote working) as well as to standard business phones system.

Cloud phone systems come with additional options, control, flexibility and transparency which are difficult to achieve using traditional PBX phones.

Cloud telephony service providers manage the complicated call routing and switching needed by cloud telephony. Businesses are left with just one task: calling and receiving calls.

VoIP phones:

Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP phone systems make use of the IP network for transmitting voice communications (and other kinds of multimedia communication). They use a packet switched telephone to transfer and receive data over the internet or the LAN and result in lower call rates. Most of the time, these phone systems are interfaced with PSTN through adapters. These adapters allow VoIP phones to route calls to and from the PSTN network. They can also be classified into two kinds:

VoIP phones on-prem:

These are also referred to as IP-PBX phone systems and are similar to on-prem PBX phone systems in their architecture. They use an VoIP server rather than a private branch exchange and can be used to make and receive calls on VoIP compatible phones.

The calls are made and received over the internet.

The phone systems have many advantages over conventional PBX systems, including cost efficiency and the ability to transmit and receive multimedia along with voice.

On-prem VoIP phone systems are infrastructure-dependent costly, heavy, and expensive.

Cloud VoIP phone systems

These phones provide all the features and benefits that come with an on-prem VoIP system, but without the heavy hardware or high installation costs.

A VoIP provider manages everything that is cloud-based and all businesses need are VoIP enabled devices that can make and take calls.

They're easy to install and don't require any ongoing maintenance. VoIP phone systems allow companies to expand and only pay for the services they utilize.
